Biographical/Historical Information

Robert Leonard Moran (born January 8, 1937, Denver, Colorado) is an American composer. He studied 12-note composition with Hans Erich Apostel in Vienna (1957-1958) and composition at Mills College with Luciano Berio and Darius Milhaud (MA 1963); in 1963 he returned to Vienna for private study with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati. At various times between 1959 and 1972 he lived in San Francisco, where he founded and co-directed the New Music Ensemble at the San Francisco Conservatory with Howard Hersh. He was composer-in-residence at Portland State University from 1972 to 1974 and at Northwestern University (1977-1978), where he also directed the New Music Ensemble. Moran has performed in Europe and throughout the United States as a pianist and is a well-known lecturer on contemporary and avant-garde music.

Many of Moran’s compositions are mixed-media pieces; his large-scale "city pieces" allow the audiences to participate in their realization under his guidance. Moran has also composed graphic works for a variety of instruments (specified and unspecified), multi-orchestral works, and children’s theater works.

Scope and Content

Includes music manuscripts, correspondence, calendars, scrapbooks, and sound recordings.

Arrangement of Materials

Arranged in 5 series: 1. Manuscript scores; 2. Correspondence; 3. Calendars; 4. Scrapbooks; 5. Sound recordings. Due to the unusually large size of Moran's graphic score manuscripts, Series 1 is arranged in two subseries: 1. Folio; 2. Oversize; the contents of both subseries are arranged chronologically. Series 2-5 are unprocessed.
