Collection Title: Guide to the Administrative Records of the Triquarterly
Dates: 1964-1997
Identification: 58/2
Creator: TriQuarterly
Extent: 22 Boxes
Language of Materials: English
Abstract: The TriQuarterly Administrative Records span the years 1964 to 1997 and fill 21 boxes. Files cover a wide range of material. Budgets, internal reviews, and correspondence with bookstores and distributors are all included. The bulk of the files, however, concern funding requests to various foundations and grant-making organizations, most notably the Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund, and the John D. and Catharine T. MacArthur Foundation.
The records also include general correspondence files for nearly every letter of the alphabet and for the years between 1983 and 1989. These contain correspondence with groups or individuals with whom only one or two letters were ever exchanged. Correspondents with more than one or two exchanges have their own folders. This organization follows the original TriQuarterly filing system. Nearly all of the correspondence is either from or to the successive editors of TriQuarterly, Charles Newman (1964-1972), Elliott Anderson (1972-1981), and Reginald Gibbons (1981-1997). One card-file box contains Rolodex cards of TriQuarterly authors, distributors, and other individuals and companies.
Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
Acquisition Information: The TriQuarterly Administrative Records were transferred to the University Archives as Accession Number 93-38 by Bob Perlongo on March 24, 1993; Accession Number 95-105 by Kirstie Felland on July 11, 1995; and Accession Number 97-134 by Reginald Gibbons on August 19, 1997; along with editorial records that were separated and added to Series 58/1.
Processing Information: Dan Schwerin; July 18, 2002.
Separated Materials: Several inches of editorial records were separated and five cubic feet of extraneous material were discarded.
Conditions Governing Access: None.

Biographical/Historical Information

Established in 1958 as a Northwestern University campus magazine, TriQuarterly took its name from the frequency of its publication schedule: one issue for each academic quarter of the year. Early issues of TriQuarterly featured essays, stories, and poems by regular and visiting Northwestern faculty, students, and associates of the University.

In 1964 TriQuarterly shifted its editorial focus from humanities to a literary format. It quickly gained a broad reputation for innovation and has been acclaimed for its publication of notable pieces of modern prose, poetry, criticism, and graphic art. While traditionally devoted to the work of American writers and artists, TriQuarterly has developed as well a willingness to publish important authors from around the world. Complementing TriQuarterly's respected issues on American fiction have been special issues featuring contemporary literature from Israel, Britain, Poland, Spain, Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, South Africa, and Asia. Theme issues have examined, among other topics, science fiction, literature in revolution, the “little” magazine as a genre, western stories, and war stories as well as the work of several individual authors. TriQuarterly supplements and special issues have provided critical insights into particular topics of literature and art.
