Scope and Contents

This series is comprised of the records of the Committee on Educational Policies. They are arranged by subject into folders, and chronologically within the folders. These records represent the wide range of activities that the committee was engaged in. The activities reflected in these records can be broken down into three general categories: official records, studies conducted by the committee, and records of the subcommittees.

The official records include three different types of records: the minutes of the CEP meetings, correspondence to and from the CEP, and the membership lists of the committee. The minutes of the CEP provide a general summary of the discussion that took place during the meetings between 1966 and 1980. Correspondence between the University Administration and the Committeecomprises a large portion of these records, but the Committee's correspondence with other bodies and individuals at Northwestern between 1967 and 1980 is also represented.

The studies conducted by the Committee are broken down into two separate groups: general surveys and studies, and individual subject studies. The general surveys and studies conducted by the CEP (CEP-Surveys, etc.) between 1972 and 1980 use the responses of students and faculty members to sets of questions on various topics, such as the academic responsibilities of faculty members, to compile raw data for comparison to responses at other universities or as a basis for recommendations to the university. The individual studies conducted by the committee (CEP Studies) are conducted along similar lines, except that they include not only a compilation of this data, but also the recommendations of the committee to the University administration. The topics covered during the period 1966-1980 include: advising, arts, CTEC and course descriptions, and class size. These records are arranged by study area and chronologically within folders.

Finally, the records of the subcommittees of the CEP, 1966-1978, are similar to those in the CEP Studies folders. The subcommittees were formed for a short period of time to examine an issue, such as the student community or housing, and they subsequently reported to the CEP recommending proposed action.

Abstract

In 1964, the central administration at Northwestern University established the Committee on Educational Policies (CEP). This committee was composed of nine members appointed by the president from a list of nominees, submitted by the General Faculty Committee. The members of CEP were chosen from a wide array of academic departments. The initial committee was formed to balance the decision-making of the administration and of the faculty in academic and budgetary decisions. In a directive to the new committee, Dean of Faculties Payson S. Wild outlined its charge "to assist the administration and represent the faculty on major educational problems". The Committee on Educational Policy served under that name until 1982 when the University Senate formed the Educational Policies Advisory Committee (EdPac), which replaced both the Committee on Curriculum and Teaching and the Committee on Educational Policies.
This collection is arranged by subject into folders, and chronologically within the folders. These records represent the wide range of activities that the committee was engaged in. The activities reflected in these records can be broken down into three general categories: official records, studies conducted by the committee, and records of the subcommittees.

Arrangement Note

The records are arranged alphabetically by subject.
