Biographical/Historical Information

For a history of the Northwestern University School of Speech’s University Theatre, Studio Theatre, and Theatre Workshops, see Lynn Miller Rein, Northwestern University School of Speech: A History ([Evanston, IL]: Northwestern University, 1981).

Scope and Content

The prompt books for theatrical productions of Northwestern University's School of Speech include scripts for University Theatre productions, annotated for use by the prompter, along with sketches of the staging and other notes.

Prompt books are organized numerically by production number (when known). The 104 bound prompt books have a volume number stamped on their spines; this volume number is the same as the number of the production. Bound prompt books include most of the productions from number 50 (1933) through number 320 (1957). The container list for the bound volumes includes play title, production number, dates staged, author, and director. Boxes 1-12 hold unbound, foldered prompt books, also arranged by production number order; however, because of the order in which they were received by the University Archives, the dates run as follows: boxes 1-5, 1956-78; boxes 6-9, 1943-1951; boxes 10-12, 1964-1984. The container list for the boxed prompt books shows the box and folder numbers, production number, title, and dates staged.

In some cases, there is no production number, either because it is not known or because the production was not part of the regular University Theatre series.
