Scope and Contents
This series includes the minute book of the Northwestern University Modern Language Club for the period October, 1938 through January, 1962, as well as a small amount of correspondence and relates materials.
From its inception in 1909, the membership of the Modern Language Club was comprised of faculty from the departments of English, Classics, German, and Romance Languages. In 1948 the group began to admit graduate students and women members of academic departments.
Club programs usually consisted of presentations, centering on current research projects, by two members. General discussion of the presentations would follow. Beginning in the 1950s the Club broadened the scope of its activities and faculty from other disciplines as well as distinguished visitors to the Northwestern campus often spoke at Club meetings.
Brief accounts of Club meetings are recorded in the minute book. Occasionally, business and administrative matters also are noted. A folder of correspondence and related materials supplements the minute book.
