Scope and Contents

The Center for Health Services and Policy Research papers full one archival box and are arranged in three series: correspondence, research projects and conference material.

The correspondence is divided into three folders. The first folder contains the official and personal correspondence of Edward Hughes, the Director of the Center. The bulk of the correspondence deals with Susan C. Hughes, with additional letters pertaining to the cost containment project. Folder two holds the official correspondence of K.R. Kosnik, a research associate at the Center. Some of the correspondence discusses the need for confidentiality of data in the Center. Folder three includes correspondence of the Samaritan Health Services Project. This project studied the application of the systems approach to health care. Its main goal was to determine how various specific structural and behavioral aspects have changed since the merger of a few hospitals in Phoenix and Maricopa County.

The second series relates to research projects, comprising six folders. The first folder contains performence evaluation mechanism for the Cost Containment Program. The next two folders contain documentation dealing with the Consolidation of the Clinical Laboratory Facility. This project studied two previously independent hospitals in Chicago which merged to become Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The first folder contains correspondence and reports and the second includes historical materials compiled in preparing the final report. Another project was the Analysis of Multiple Unit Health Care. This was an analysis of a group of twenty-two multiple unit health care organizations. The first folder includes a report and questionnaire; second a system coding for the project and the last folder contains personnel and corporate forms that were filled out by staff at the hospital. The third project was the Patient Classification Study. There is only one folder for this project which contains material relating to coding for the project.

The conference series contains material concerning the National Center for Health Services Research Workshop. The workshop discusses issues that are related to the delivery of health services.

Abstract

The Center for Health Services and Policy Research was established jointly by the Hospital Research and Educational Trust and Northwestern University in 1967. The Center was established to examine technological, scientific, social, political, and economic trends and relate them to the provision of health services. The Center has conducted and stimulated research on such problems as staffing, financing, planning, organization, administration and evaluation of health services. The Center's papers contain correspondence, research projects and conference material.

Arrangement

The correspondence is arranged by the name of the correspondent. R+esearch projects are arranged chronologically.

Method of Acquisition

Two archival boxes were transferred to the Northwestern University Archives by Judy Hicks, Secretary of the Center, on August 17, 1981 as Accession #81-178.

Separated Materials

Fourteen journal articles were separated by Northwestern University and transferred to the Archives biographical files. One folder of material relating to a personal committee reviewing the faculty status of Beaufort B. Longfest was transferred to program in Hospital Administration General Administration Files 12/2/1. Half and archival box with resumes for the position of Associate Director for the Center were discarded as well as small amounts of duplicate and extraneous material.
