Abstract: The objective of the Corporate Counsel Institute is to provide corporate counsels and private attorneys in corporate practice with a forum for expert analysis of legal issues of special interest and importance to those in the field of corporate law. The records in this series fill six boxes and are comprised of correspondence, planning committee meeting minutes, speaker biographies and presentation outlines, financial statements and budgetary records, topic questionnaires, registrant lists, publicity, and published Institute proceedings.
Acquisition Information: These records were transferred by the Northwestern University School of Law to the University Archives on May 10, 1998, as Accession no. 98-76. They are combined with Accession no. 97-28, transferred from the Law Library to the University Archives on March 17, 1997, and with records separated from Accession no. 98-70, transferred from the Law Library to the University Archives on May 5, 1998.

Biographical/Historical Information

The Corporate Counsel Institute has been held annually since 1962 by the Northwestern University School of Law, with the cooperation and support of the Institute on Continuing Education of the Illinois State Bar Association, the Chicago Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. Traditionally, the Institute is held during two days in October.  The objective of the Corporate Counsel Institute is to provide corporate counsels and private attorneys in corporate practice with a forum for expert analysis of legal issues of special interest and importance to those in the field of corporate law. In addition to formal presentations exploring current legal topics, the Institute provides opportunities for informal discussion of mutual problems and concerns among corporate counsels.  The papers presented at the Institute are published in annual proceedings.

Scope and Content

The records in this series fill six boxes and are comprised of correspondence, planning committee meeting minutes, speaker biographies and presentation outlines, financial statements and budgetary records, topic questionnaires, registrant lists, publicity, and published Institute proceedings. Although the records in this series range from 1962-1997, the bulk date from 1966-1971. There are very few records for the period 1971-1997.

The correspondence, arranged chronologically, is scattered over the period 1962-1991 and consists mainly of communications with Institute speakers, registrants, and guests; letters relating to the publication of speakers' papers; and inquiries about Institute programs and published proceedings. Other correspondence concerns program administration. There are also communications with the Illinois State Bar Association's Institute on Continuing Education, and with Institute exhibitors, and publicity providers. Three folders of minutes, 1967-1972, document the meetings of the Institute's planning committee. Annual reports of the Institute Director submitted to the planning committee, and lists of committee members, are included with the minutes. It should be noted that the published proceedings, which are produced from the papers delivered at the Institute, generally include footnoted references that were not included in the speaker presentation outlines distributed to registrants attending the Institute. Additional materials of interest include two folders of topic questionnaires, 1969-1970, which identify topics Institute registrants would like to see discussed at the next Institute. The folders are arranged in alphabetical order by subject, and records within folders are arranged chronologically by date. The proceedings are filed at the end of the series.
