Scope and Contents

The Tom Myers papers fill 5 boxes. Material in boxes 1 and 2 contain such documents as Myers’s high-school autobiography, recruitment letters from many universities, and various news articles relating to his success as a quarterback and to his outstanding passing ability. Also included are some of the awards with which he was honored, his high school and college football playbooks, and information pertaining to his induction into the Troy Hall of Fame. Items in these boxes are organized thematically and placed into alphabetical order by their descriptive folder titles.

The third and fourth boxes contain Myers’s scrapbooks and other oversized items.  Box 3 holds a scrapbook documenting Myers’ 1962 football season, along with three oversized magazines: two issues of LOOK and one of LIFE.  Box 4 contains two scrapbooks covering later periods, including one relating to Myers’s 1965 professional season with the Detroit Lions.

Box 5 holds a plastic water bottle created for the 2012 Tom Myers Open, an informal golf outing including Myers and some of his friends.

Abstract

Northwestern football star Thomas Welborn Myers was the starting quarterback for the Wildcats in the 1962 season under coach Ara Parseghian. He was named All-American and All-Time All American, and went on to play for the Detroit Lions. His papers include clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, and other materials documentiing Myers' football career.

Method of Acquisition

The Tom Myers Papers were donated to the University Archives by Myers on June 2012 as accession #12-106, with additional material donated by Mr. Myers in April, 2013 as Accession # 13-71

Separated Materials

Separated materials include one digital video disc (Northwestern University Archives DVD #413), four 16mm motion picture films (“Tom Myers Passing,” (#1180) “Movie Zone: Tom Myers QB film,” (#1181) “Troy vs. Xenia, 1959” (2 reels #s1182-1183)), and 6 VHS videocassettes (#3267-3272).
