Biographical/Historical Information
Professor of art history George Haydn Huntley was born July 14, 1905, in Endicott, Washington. He attended Harvard University, receiving a B.S. degree in 1927, an A.M. in 1930, and a Ph.D. in 1933, all in Fine Arts. He joined the faculty of Northwestern University in 1946 as an associate professor of art, remaining at NU until his retirement in 1973. Huntley's research centered on two areas: the art of the Italian Renaissance and stylistic developments of the nineteenth century.
Huntley began his teaching career in 1932 as an instructor of art history at Washington University in St. Louis. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1936 and in 1938 accepted a position at the University of Chicago as assistant professor of art history and departmental counselor. During the summer of 1945 Huntley served as visiting professor at the University of Southern California. He joined the faculty of Northwestern University in 1946 as an associate professor of art and in 1948 was promoted to the rank of professor. Huntley retired from Northwestern and was named emeritus professor in 1973.
Huntley's research centered on two areas: the art of the Italian Renaissance and stylistic developments of the nineteenth century. He authored one book, Andrea Sansovino (Harvard, 1935), a chapter on nineteenth century design and decorative art for Arts of the United States (McGraw-Hill, 1960), and numerous booklets, articles and reviews. He also served on the boards of several professional associations and scholarly journals.
On July 13, 1934, Huntley married Nella Davigo. The Huntleys had three children: John, born April 29, 1937, Mary (Mahoney) born September 29, 1939 and Margaret (Travelli) born March 27, 1942. Mrs. Huntley died in 1975. G. Haydn Huntley died on 24 Apr 2001.

The G. Haydn Huntley Papers, comprising one half-size box, span the years from 1938 to 1975 and include one folder of biographical materials, one of articles, and three of grade books. The papers are scattered and only thinly document Huntley's career as an educator.
