Biographical/Historical Information

Art historian James Douglas Breckenridge was born in Brooklyn, New York, August 8, 1926, the son of Clarence E. and Erna Gritschke Breckenridge. He received a B.A. with distinction in fine arts from Cornell University in 1945, and from Princeton University, an M.F.A. with honors in 1949 and a Ph.D. in 1957. Breckenridge joined the art faculty of Northwestern University in 1961, remaining until his death in 1982. His research interests focused on religious art and the art and architecture of Rome, Byzantium, and the Middle Ages.

From 1952 to 1955, Breckenridge was Curator and Keeper of the Clark Collection at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. During 1954 he was a visiting lecturer in art at Goucher College. Breckenridge served as a curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art from 1955 to 1960, and from 1957 to 1959 he also was a lecturer in art at Johns Hopkins University. During 1960-1961 he was a visiting Associate Professor of fine arts at the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1961 Breckenridge came to Northwestern University as an Associate Professor of art. He was promoted to Professor in 1966. In 1973, the year after Northwestern's Department of Art History was separated from the Department of Art, Breckenridge's title changed to Professor of Art History, the position he held until his death on December 18, 1982. He served as Chairman of the Department of Art from 1964 to 1972 and of the Department of Art History from 1972 to 1974.

Although a specialist in religious art and the art and architecture of Rome, Byzantium, and the Middle Ages, Breckenridge taught, lectured, and wrote on a wide variety of topics in art history. His publications centered on antique portraiture and numismatic motifs.

Breckenridge was a founder of the Midwest Art History Society in 1973 and served as President from 1977 to 1980. He also served the Society as its Secretary/Treasurer and as a member of several of its committees. Breckenridge was active in the American Numismatic Society and the College Art Association. He sat on numerous committees of Northwestern University and its College of Arts and Sciences.

He received two Fulbright grants: studying in Paris in 1950-1951 and in Bulgaria in 1981-1982. In 1959 and 1960 Breckenridge was a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. He was a Senior Fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities in 1970-1971 and during 1974-1975 he was a visiting member of the Institute for Advanced Research at Princeton.

Breckenridge married twice, in 1949 to Charlotte from whom he was divorced in 1963, and in 1964 to Dorte Ulrich. With his second wife he had two children: Alexander and Susanne. James Breckenridge died on December 18, 1982.

Scope and Content

The James Breckenridge Papers, filling 23 boxes and spanning the period 1924-1983, are arranged in eight subseries: biographical materials, education files, correspondence, teaching files, research and consulting files, professional organizations files, speeches and papers, and publications.

Biographical materials include curricula vitae, clippings, news releases, obituaries, and various records pertaining to Breckenridge's homes, travels, and finances. Included are several clippings, letters, and questionnaires relating to Breckenridge's former home at 2420 Harrison Street in Evanston, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The education files contain notes, papers, and related materials from Breckenridge's undergraduate and graduate training. Drafts of his doctoral thesis are located here.

General correspondence, arranged chronologically by date, includes letters, both incoming and outgoing, mainly pertaining to publications, travels, teaching, and speaking engagements. Breckenridge's correspondence with Erwin Panofksy is located in Box 9, Folder 19 (Sept. 23, 1958, Jan. 6, 1959), Box 21, Folder 8 (Jan. 3, 1952- April 23, 1957), and Box 17, Folder 3 (Nov. 26, 1966). Subject correspondence, arranged alphabetically by folder title, relates to several of the institutions where Breckenridge had served prior to his appointment at Northwestern. Correspondence relating to specific travels, publications, friends, and colleagues also is filed here.

The teaching files fill about four boxes and embrace lecture and reading notes, schedules, syllabi, grade sheets, and, frequently, student papers. Some correspondence, papers, and grade sheets relating to graduate students are included with the teaching files.

Research and consulting files represent a major component of the Papers and contain numerous grant proposals prepared by Breckenridge as well as a small amount of correspondence pertaining to proposals evaluated by Breckenridge. Also found here are materials relating to art exhibits and competitions for which Breckenridge served as a judge. Breckenridge's corporate consulting and service on behalf of the Evanston Arts Center and the Municipal Art Commission of Evanston are documented in these files.

Most of the materials in the professional organizations files pertain to the Midwest Art History Society and Breckenridge's service as a Society Officer.

The files relating to speeches and papers that Breckenridge presented at professional meetings include both speech and paper drafts and pertinent correspondence. The files are arranged according to the title of the conference or the name of the organization before which Breckenridge spoke.

The bulk of the Papers relate to Breckenridge's publications. His major book, Likeness: Conceptual History of Ancient Portraiture (Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1969), is represented by several drafts and considerable correspondence and notes. The text for his monograph, The Numismatic Iconography of Justinian II, an outgrowth of his doctoral dissertation, is here in draft and page proof form. The Age of Spirituality, the catalog of a major exhibition mounted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, includes many entries prepared by Breckenridge. The wide range of themes addressed in his articles is well documented and often represented by texts, correspondence, and reprints. Many of Breckenridge's reviews are included here. Finally, during the early and mid-1960s, Breckenridge wrote a series of weekly articles on art criticism for the Chicago American, a similar series for Chicago Scene magazine, and numerous articles for the Chicago Tribune. These articles are found at the end of the publications subseries.

Addition, Box 23

This addition to the James D. Breckenridge Papers, comprising one folder and spanning the period 1975-1984, consists of Breckenridge's correspondence. The correspondence is arranged chronologically by date and relates primarily to Breckenridge's research and travel plans.
