Scope and Contents

This series consists of one volume of S.A.T.C. accounts with Northwestern University. The volume carefully and completely documents the S.A.T.C.'s brief but eventful tenure at Northwestern. The accounts cover the period October, 1918 to February, 1919.  The volume is divided into four sections: Evanston-Vocational, NU Buildings, Medical, and Evanston-Collegiate.

The first section contains the accounts relating to vocational students being trained as sheet metal workers, wood workers, and radio operators. The second and third sections include records pertaining to the S.A.T.C. on the Chicago campus, and the fourth section details the accounts of the undergraduate training on the Evanston campus. Included in the fourth section are records pertaining to naval officers housed in Garrett Theological Seminary dormitories.

Abstract

This series consists of one volume of Student Army Training Corps (S.A.T.C.) dcoumenting its accounts during its existence at Northwestern during/post World War I.

Arrangement Note

The volume is divided into four sections: Evanston-Vocational, NU Buildings, Medical, and Evanston-Collegiate.  Each section is arranged by account numbers. Each section begins with account #1, which might cause some confusion in using the records.

The account headings fall into five categories for the first three sections: administration, subsistence (board), quarters (room), instruction, and construction. The Evanston-Collegiate section contains the additional headings: quartermaster, Y.M.C.A. and Canteen, athletic equipment, and storeroom and warehouse.

Under each heading are individual sheets for accounts. Accounts were created for items such as food purchases, building repairs, salaries, and construction materials. Entries on the sheets are made chronologically in charge (for credit transactions) and debit (for cash transactions) columns. The accounts are not balanced so apparently some other record must have been kept containing information on the settlement of accounts. The entries have posting numbers but they do not correspond to other financial records held by the Archives.

Method of Acquisition

This volume was transfered to the University Archives on May 15, 1980 by Ed Dublin/University Business Office as part of Accession #80-74.

Related Materials

Records of Base Hospital Unit No. 12 (Series 0/20/7) and Records of Word Wars I and II (Series 46/2) (includes list of additional resources).
