Scope and Contents

The Jimmie E. Quon Papers, consisting of 16 boxes (one half-size) and spanning the period 1954-1980, are arranged in seven main subseries: biographical materials, educational materials, correspondence, teaching files, meetings and associations, research and consultation, and writings. Within subseries and folders the basic arrangement is chronological.

The biographical material includes biographical and activity questionnaires. Of special interest is the folder of correspondence concerning job offers from several universities. (Box 1 Folder 5)

The educational materials include a few items pertaining to his student days at the University of California, with the bulk of the materials relating to special courses the Technological Institute offered to its faculty.

The general correspondence pertains primarily to Quon's research, writing, and teaching activities, but also includes several requests to serve on boards and committees. The major portion of the correspondence consists of letters of recommendation for students and former students.

The teaching materials comprises one third of the papers. Of this, four boxes include notes, correspondence, records, and drafts of master's theses and doctoral dissertations written by Quon's graduate students. Also included are lecture notes, class schedules, exams, and student papers.

The files concerning meetings and associations consist primarily of notes correspondence, records, lists, and vouchers for travel and reimbursable activities.

The research and consultation subseries includes notes, correspondence, drafts and submitted copies of interim and final reports, and records of and claims for expenses and fees. Of special interest are the three folders pertaining to his consultation for the village of Highland Park. Illinois, on the Clavey Road Sewage Treatment Plant. (Box 11 Folders 14-16)

The writings consist of drafts and published copies of articles, primarily on sanitary engineering and air pollution. Included here are major reports from several of Quon's research and consultation projects. Also here are drafts of three chapters of a book on energy and pollution, apparently from one of Quon's three unpublished books on his disease.

Abstract

Civil Engineering Professor Jimmie Earl Quon was a prolific author and speaker primarily on the topics of sanitary engineering and air pollution. He consulted for cities, states, and the federal government, as well as for various private businesses in the area of environmental quality. Quon came to Northwestern as Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering. In 1963 he was promoted to Associate Professor and in 1967 to Professor. In 1976 he became chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering. The Jimmie E.
