Abstract: Olga M. Haring was a faculty member at Northwestern University from 1965 until she received emeritus status in 1987. In 1974 she received a dual appointment in the departments of medicine and of community health and preventive medicine. The Haring Papers fill nine boxes and span the period 1952-1984, with the major portion falling between 1965 and 1975. The papers are organized in three categories: teaching files, research files, and publications. The largest portion of the papers consists of Haring's research files, filling seven boxes.
Acquisition Information: The Olga M. Haring Papers were transferred to the University Archives by Linda Anderson, secretary of the Department of Medicine, on November 13, 1987 (Accession #87-241).
Processing Information: William K. Beatty, August, 1991.Updated by: Jeremy Keen Abbott, June 2005.
Separated Materials: Twenty-one archival boxes of data entry forms from the Computerized Record Summary System were discarded upon the advice of Dr. Jack Snarr, Associate Dean of the Medical School, who examined these forms at the Northwestern University Archives on September 30, 1991. These forms were a sampling of patient information which were summarized and evaluated on worksheets prepared for data entry. Haring gathered this data to carry out her research in automating patient records. Numerous black and white photographs (prints and negatives), mostly related to research on cardiac malformations in chickens and rats, were transferred to the Archives photograph collection. Approximately four linear inches of Medical Faculty Senate Records were separated and accessioned as #91-139 on August 12, 1991. Approximately sixty linear inches of extraneous material and twenty linear inches of duplicate material were discarded.
Conditions Governing Access: Patient record material (Box 2 Folder 4 - Box 23 Folder 3; Box 28 Folders 8-9) may be consulted only with the permission of the University Archivist.

She earned a B.A. (1932) at the Gymnasium of Budapest, an M.D. from the University of Vienna (1938) and another M.D. from the University of Leon in Nicaragua (1939). In 1949 she obtained an Assistance Etrangere in Cardiology from the Sorbonne.

After completing two appointments at the Chicago Medical School, Haring joined the Northwestern University faculty as assistant professor of medicine in 1965. Later that year she became director of the cardio-pulmonary-renal clinic at the Medical School. She was promoted to associate professor in 1970. In 1974 she became a full professor with a dual appointment in the departments of medicine and of community health and preventive medicine. She received emeritus status in 1987.

Scope and Content

The Olga M. Haring Papers fill nine boxes and span the period 1952-1984, with the major portion falling between 1965 and 1975. The papers are organized in three categories: teaching files, research files, and publications. Also included are one folder of biographical materials, one of correspondence, and two of administrative files.

The teaching files document Haring's instruction in the cardio-pulmonary-renal clinic and deal with student involvement in medical records automation projects. The files consist largely of papers written by Haring's students covering both these areas. Correspondence and memoranda regarding teaching methods used in the clinic are also present. Haring's workshops on medical records automation are documented by workshop agendas, participant lists, and sample medical records information used as instructional material.

The largest portion of the papers consists of Haring's research files, filling seven boxes. They are arranged alphabetically by subject title. The bulk of these files pertain to Haring's research in automating patient's medical records. General administrative files relating to the computerized medical records project, known as the Computerized Record Summary System, includes budgets, correspondence, data analysis, computer data cards, flow charts, grant proposals, staff project assignments, patient schedules and questionnaires. Smaller categories within the research files cover experimental cardiac malformations and drug treatment of cardiac problems. The files on cardiac malformations contain notes on chicken and rat experiments, a small amount of drawings, as well as research notes and papers by colleagues. The drug treatment files include patient questionnaires from the cardio-pulmonary-renal clinic, evaluation of the responses, and grant proposals relating to research in this area.

The publications consist of material relating to journal articles written by Haring. A typical article file contains drafts and reprints. They are arranged alphabetically by title.
