Biographical/Historical Information

The Student War Council of Northwestern University was founded in the summer of 1941, and began its activities immediately following the outbreak of World War II. The Council was composed of presidents of campus organizations, representatives of campus dormitories, and interested students. The Council coordinated a variety of student activities associated with the war effort. These included assisting in the process of the registration and counselling for the draft, the sale of "defense stamps," the presentation of speakers on wartime issues, the offering of non-credit "defense courses," and the involvement of Northwestern women in USO efforts as "junior hostesses."

Scope and Content

The records include the constitution of the Student War Council of Northwestern University, as well as the constitution of the Illinois Collegiate War Council, of which the Student War Council of Northwestern University was a member. Minutes of the Student War Council of Northwestern University (1941-1944) are included, as well as committee reports. Of particular interest are files on “defense courses,” offerred by Northwestern University, beginning as early as December 10, 1941, and including a class on internal combustion engines for ambulance drivers, as well as a course on knitting. Reports of the “Junior Hostesses” Committee reflect on the condition of soldiers, many of whom were suffering from battle fatigues at Fort Sheridan and sailors and marines at Great Lakes Naval Station late in the war.
