Abstract: Fountain served as a member of the faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Choirmaster at St. Paul Lutheran Church before joining the faculty of Northwestern University's School of Music as the Professor of Organ and Church Music in 1961. The Grigg Fountain Papers fill one half-size archival box and date from 1961-1986. The bulk of the Papers are comprised of correspondence, both personal and professional covering the years 1961-73. Also included are one folder each of biographical materials and Northwestern press releases regarding Fountain's music career.
Acquisition Information: The University Archives received the Grigg Fountain Papers on June 4, 1987. They were separated from the Ralph G. Dunlop Papers (30/8) on December 27, 1988 and accessioned as # 88-295.

Biographical/Historical Information

Grigg Fountain was born in October 1916 in Bishopville, North Carolina. Fountain served as a member of the faculty at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Choirmaster at St. Paul Lutheran Church before joining the faculty of Northwestern University's School of Music as the Professor of Organ and Church Music in 1961. He remained at NU until his retirement in 1986.

Fountain attended Wake Forest College for one year (1935-36) and obtained a B.A. degree in music from Furman University (1936-39). He continued his training in music, earning both B.M. and M.M. degrees in Church Music and Organ at Yale University (1943). With a Fulbright fellowship (1953-54) he studied Baroque organ literature in Frankfurt-Am-Main, Germany. From 1946 to 1961 he was a member of the faculty at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Choirmaster at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lakewood, Ohio. He was a member of the National Council of Churches of Christ. He gave many recitals and choral workshops in colleges and universities throughout the Eastern United States. In 1961 he was appointed Professor of Organ and Church Music in the School of Music at Northwestern University. He remained in this position until his retirement as Emeritus in August 1986. In addition to his teaching organ he was organist and choirmaster of Alice Millar Chapel Choir. Fountain was married and had four children.
