Biographical/Historical Information

Robert William Sekuler was born in Elizabeth. New Jersey, on May 7, 1939. He obtained his A.B. at Brandeis University (1960) and his Sc.M. (1963) and Ph.D. (1964) at Brown University. Sekular joined Northwestern's faculty in 1965 as a professor of psychology. He left Northwestern in 1989 to return to Brandeis as a Dean.

Joining the Northwestern faculty as assistant professor of psychology in 1965 Sekuler was promoted to associate professor in 1968 and professor in 1973. His breadth of interests became recognized in his next three appointments at Northwestern: in 1978, professor of ophthalmology in the Medical School; in 1981, professor of neurobiology and physiology; and in 1986, John Evans Professor of Neuroscience. From 1975 to 1979 he served as chair of the Department of Psychology, and, from 1985 to 1988 as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1989 Sekuler left Northwestern to accept the position of Provost and Dean of Faculty at Brandeis University.

Sekuler held many positions with research groups, especially the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council. His own research interests were primarily in the fields of perception, vision, illusions, and reading, especially among the elderly. He obtained many research grants and contracts, chiefly from the U.S. Air Force s Office of Scientific Research, the National Institute on Aging, and the Army Research Institute. On June 25, 1961 Sekuler married Susan Pamela Nemser; they had three children: Stacia, Allison, and Erica.

Scope and Content

The Robert W. Sekuler Papers fill thirteen boxes and span the period 1960-1989. They are organized in five categories: correspondence, teaching files, research files, papers presented before professional organizations, and publications. Four folders of biographical materials are also included.

The general correspondence deals primarily with Sekuler s research and publication activities. The subject correspondence consists mainly of recommendations for graduate students and faculty colleagues.

The teaching files consist primarily of course lecture and reading notes. There are also some exam and grade sheets. A small number of subject files relating to Sekuler's teaching activities are filed at the end of this category.

The research files, the largest category, consist of research proposals, notes, data, correspondence, and reports. Material in many of the files relate to Sekuler's grant-supported and contracted research with branches of the U.S. military. Grant-supported research from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health are documented as well in this section.

The category of Papers Presented before Professional Organizations includes drafts, notes, and correspondence.

The publications category includes drafts of articles authored by Sekuler, correspondence, notes, and reprints. The last folder holds 41 5 1/4" diskettes containing the text of Sekuler's book, Perception, published by Random House/Knopf in 1985.

Arrangement of Materials

The Sekuler Papers are organized in five categories: correspondence (general correspondence arranged chronologically, subject correspondence alphabetically by topic and chronologically within topic); teaching files (arranged by course number and chronologically within courses); research files (grouped by grant or project); papers presented before professional organizations (arranged alphabetically according to the name of the organization in which the paper was presented); and publications (arranged alphabetically by title). Four folders of biographical materials are also included.
