Scope and Contents

This series contains payroll record cards for Northwestern University faculty, staff and administrators from the period 1904-1930. The card format is 3 x 5" pre-printed stock with spaces for individual's name, address, department, appropriations, number of payments as well as additional remarks. Each card notes a University employee's name and title, if any, and the department or building in which he or she was employed. Each employee's pay delivery address is given as well. The address may be the individual's or University department. The cards also list the employee's monthly salary and cumulative annual wages.

The last two boxes of the series contain employee salary cards from the period circa 1904-1909. These cards appear to be a fragmented record of employee pay raises. They note the name of the faculty or staff member and the year. The cards have been retained in their original order; they are not arranged by employee surname or by organizational division of the University.

Abstract

This series contains payroll record cards for Northwestern University faculty, staff and administrators from the period 1904-1930. The card format is 3 x 5" pre-printed stock with spaces for individual's name, address, department, appropriations, number of payments as well as additional remarks. Each card notes a University employee's name and title, if any, and the department or building in which he or she was employed. Each employee's pay delivery address is given as well. The address may be the individual's or University department. The cards also list the employee's monthly salary and cumulative annual wages.

Arrangement Note

Payroll records are arranged first according to academic year. Academic year is defined on the top line of each card. For the periods 1904-1916 and 1918-1919, the cars are arranged thereafter by the division in which the employee worked. Within these divisions the cards are then alphabetized by employee surname. For academic year groupings from the periods 1916-1918 and 1919-1930, the cards are arranged alphabetically by employee surname. For 1912-1913 and 1918-1919, record cards from the College of Liberal Arts have been arranged by department name, not by employee surname. Record cards from 1918-1919 also list Summer School subdivisions for entities such as the School of Music, School of Oratory, Law School, and School of Commerce as well as a subdivision of Post-Graduate Dental School.
