Scope and Contents

This series, filling two boxes, spans the dates 1913 to 1998, with the bulk of the records dating between 1970 and 1985. The organizational records of the Panhellenic Association include several copies of the Constitution and by-laws dated between 1971 to 1985. Clippings of news articles from the 1940's through 1990's are mainly from The Daily Northwestern with some other periodicals represented. The clippings cover Rush activities throughout this period, along with controversies regarding charges of racial discrimination in the 1960's, and decreased pledging of sororities and coed fraternity housing during the 1970's. Clippings from the 1980's and 1990's relate to changing the University's alcohol policy and its effects on sororities and fraternities. Many of the articles relate to Panhellenic's sponsorship of Rush.

Minutes of the weekly Panhellenic Association Council Meetings begin with the record of a single meeting in 1973 and then continue from 1976 through the fall of 1992, with the addition of minutes for spring, 1994. They are organized by academic year. Some copies of agendas are included, as are various membership lists of the Panhellenic Representatives from each sorority, Sorority Presidents, and Rush chairpersons. General correspondence from 1965 to 1986 includes communications from the Dean of Women regarding discrimination policies, residential life survey results, and scholarship information.

Panhellenic Activities records include those relating to the non-Rush-related offerings the association sponsored from 1971 to 1998. Evaluations of the Panhellenic Association by some of its members span 1979 to 1983. Materials related to Rush include proposals, guidelines and policies, rules and statistics and publicity material beginning in 1939 and extending through 1995. The file also includes scholarship award/service award applications from 1979.

Records related to Associated Student Government (ASG) include lists of representative from the Panhellenic community and a Student Activities Funding Board Petition for 1985-86.

Publications of the Panhellenic Association include the program for a National Pan-Hellenic Congress Luncheon held in 1913 on the Northwestern University campus, a Pledge Trainer's Manual from 1965, a Rush Counselor Training Manual from 1989, and a Judicial Board Manual and a Panhellenic Representative Manual, both published in 1991.
