Abstract: The Speech Program’s section of the National High School Institute program is the largest division in the High School Institute at Northwestern. High school students who participate in the summer institute spend five weeks at Northwestern. The Institute was established at Northwestern in 1930 and is the oldest in the country. Although the Speech Papers are incomplete, they fall roughly into thirteen major subject groups, collected in ten boxes. Examples of the types of materials included are: admissions materials, budget materials, faculty contracts, institute correspondence and memos, counseling and housing arrangements, planning, publicity and publications, projects and productions by students, and individual departmental materials.

Biographical/Historical Information

The National High School Institute at Northwestern University was established in 1930. The School of Speech offered special summer courses in dramatics for high school students. The School of Journalism soon followed, offering a course in 1934. In 1936 the program as a whole was called the National High School Institute for the first time. Eventually the NHSI offered programs in business, debate and public speaking, education, engineering, music, electronic communications media, communication studies, and communicative disorders. Participants live in University dormitories and take courses taught by Northwestern University faculty, faculty from other institutions, and working professionals. NHSI students have been known as “Cherubs” since the 1930s when Ralph Dennis, Dean of the School of Speech and founder of the program, admitted that “cherubs they ain't.”

The Medill School of Journalism's division of the Institute is traditionally a five-week course for high school students which touches on almost all phases of journalism, including reporting, creative writing, contemporary thought, feature writing, editorial writing, news editing and layout. The program consists of lab sessions, lectures and seminars, workshops, field trips, panel discussions, film clinics and evaluations by staff members.

Scope and Content

Although the Speech Papers are incomplete, they fall roughly into thirteen major subject groups, collected in ten boxes. Within each group, the material is arranged chronologically whenever possible and otherwise, alphabetically. The major subject groups are:

GROUP I: General materials and complete information booklets from 1945-1970.

GROUP II: Admissions materials, including applications, acceptance and rejection form letters, information regarding activities and awards, from 1966-1972.

GROUP III: The Budget, which includes information on student finance, scholarships, purchasing, from 1964-1972.

GROUP IV: Faculty Contracts, including acceptances and rejections, from 1967-1972.

GROUP V: Institute Correspondence and Memos from 1965-1972 including those concerning Dean Bradford (1966-72), Institute Coordination (1965-72), Drama Coordinator (1968, 1969), Institute Directors (1971-72), Miscellaneous correspondence (1971); Memos (1966-72) including those from David Zarefsky.

GROUP VI: Counseling and Housing Arrangements from 1963-72. GROUP VII: National High School Institute (NHSI) Information, 1969-71.

Addition 1, Boxes 11-22

These additions span the years from 1970 through 1980 and are arranged in eleven and one-half boxes. They are comprised of the general administrative records of the School of Speech's National High School Institute. The records include correspondence, memoranda, reports, budgets, rosters, manuals, requisitions, and related materials pertaining to the Institute's admissions policies, curriculum, tuition, financial aid, student housing and food service, special activities, entertainment, field trips, faculty, and counselors.

The records are organized into three subseries: general and subject correspondence files, budget files, and subject files. The general and subject correspondence is arranged in two boxes chronologically according to year and thereafter alphabetically by file heading. Budget files fill about one-half box and are arranged chronologically by year. The subject files form the bulk of the series and are arranged first chronologically according to year and then alphabetically by file heading.

Addition 2, Boxes 23-24

These additions are comprised of general administrative records of the School of Speech's National High School Institute. The records date between 1978 and 1981 and include correspondence, expense statements and budgets as well as lists, directories, and related materials pertaining mainly to the Institute's staffing. The additions also document to a lesser degree student scholarships, housing, entertainment, field trips, and class scheduling.

The records are arranged in four categories: general correspondence, student evaluation requests, faculty staffing files, and administrative subject files. The general correspondence consists mainly of requests for information concerning the Institute, replies to students not accepted for study, and materials dealing with a proposed library for the Institute's Forensics Division. The student evaluation requests consist mainly of incoming correspondence requesting faculty evaluations of student work completed at the Institute. The bulk of the records relate to faculty staffing, particularly the hiring of faculty for the Institute of Summer, 1981. The faculty staffing files include position applications, applicants' letters of reference, and copies of acceptance notifications to those hired. The administrative subject files include records pertaining to scholarship aid, entertainment opportunities for Institute students, class scheduling, budgetary matters, and related administrative concerns. These files are arranged alphabetically by folder heading.

Addition 3, Boxes 25-29

Included in these additions are the 1982-1983 general administrative records of the School of Speech's National High School Institute. Filling four and one-half boxes, the records document NHSI faculty staffing, special events and field trips, budgetary matters and financial aid, student housing, advertising, and promotions. The records are arranged first according to program year, i.e., 1982 and 1983, and thereafter alphabetically by folder title.

      Scope and Contents: These additions are comprised of general administrative records of the School of Speech's National High School Institute. The records date between 1978 and 1981 and include correspondence, expense statements and budgets as well as lists, directories, and related materials pertaining mainly to the Institute's staffing. The additions also document to a lesser degree student scholarships, housing, entertainment, field trips, and class scheduling. The records are arranged in four categories: general correspondence, student evaluation requests, faculty staffing files, and administrative subject files. The general correspondence consists mainly of requests for information concerning the Institute, replies to students not accepted for study, and materials dealing with a proposed library for the Institute's Forensics Division. The student evaluation requests consist mainly of incoming correspondence requesting faculty evaluations of student work completed at the Institute. The bulk of the records relate to faculty staffing, particularly the hiring of faculty for the Institute of Summer, 1981. The faculty staffing files include position applications, applicants' letters of reference, and copies of acceptance notifications to those hired. The administrative subject files include records pertaining to scholarship aid, entertainment opportunities for Institute students, class scheduling, budgetary matters, and related administrative concerns.
