Abstract

The records of the Faculty Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics include material which spans the dates 1906-1971. The bulk of the records are from the 1950s and 1960s, with only a few miscellaneous items previous to that. The records have been divided into three categories: Local Committee Records, Intercollegiate Conference (Big Ten) Athletic Association Records, and N.C.A.A. and Miscellaneous Records.

Arrangement

The records have been divided into three categories: Local Committee Records, Intercollegiate Conference (Big Ten) Athletic Association Records, and N.C.A.A. and Miscellaneous Records.

The Local Committee Records include a virtually complete run of minutes from the 1950s and 1960s. The General Correspondence includes material relating to a wide variety of subjects. Correspondence Regarding Applications for Director of Athletics has been filed separately. The General Correspondence also includes some material on eligibility requirements, however most material relating to this topic is filed under Eligibility-Lists and Correspondence.

The financial materials include Financial Statements/Budget Statements, and Examiner's Reports issued yearly by the conference and twice annually by an accounting firm. Other Examiner's Reports include spot-checks made regularly at the Big Ten schools to insure that proper procedures are employed regarding financial aid to athletes and methods of recruiting. The material pertaining to eligibility includes general materials as well as materials relating specific rulings and cases. The Rose Bawl material includes correspondence relating to various negotiations and financial arrangements for the mutual Rose Bawl game.

The Faculty Representatives material includes a Handbook which gives some historical background of the Big Ten conference, its functions and the relationship of its various components. The Minutes are fairly complete for the 1950s and 1960s. Agendas for meetings have been filed with the minutes.

This series also includes a small amount of records relating to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (N.C.A.A.) of which Northwestern is a member, and a folder pertaining to the Athletic Association of Western Universities.

Addition, Box 7, folders 14-19 Added to the records in January, 1978.

Addition, Box 8 The additions date between 1970 and 1981, covering the tenures of Leon Bosch (1970-1975) and Laurence Nobles (1975-1981) as Faculty Representative. In 1981, Fred Hemke became the Faculty Representative. Records consist of general and subject correspondence, and files relating to student athletes at Northwestern.

General correspondence covers a range of topics relating to Northwestern's involvement in the Big Ten, the NCAA, and the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives, including legal and financial issues, women's athletics, and proposed legislation. Correspondents include the athletics director at Northwestern, NU's president, members of the US Congress, and faculty representatives, athletics directors, and administrators at other Conference schools. Subject correspondence files discuss a proposed merger of two sub-committees of NU's General Faculty Committee, need-based athletics scholarships, and a Faculty Representatives Task force which investigated ways to incorporate women's athletics into the intercollegiate organization.

Files relating to student athletes consist of a general file, with dates spanning the years 1972-1981, containing correspondence and supporting documents on eligibility, petitions, and activities of student athletes at Northwestern. Separate files document the specific cases of two student athletes.
