College of Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics Departmental Files

This series consists of the general files of the Mathematics Department for the period 1913-1955 with the bulk of the records falling between 1936 and 1946. The files are arranged in eleven major subject categories as follows:

Correspondence of Departmental Chairman, two boxes including the correspondence of Elton James Moulton, chairman from 1935/36 to 1942/43, Harold T. Davis, chairman from 1943/44 - 1954/55, arranged chronologically. The bulk of Davis' correspondence extends through December of 1946.

Sundry Applications and other records pertaining to the availability of jobs comprising almost 3 boxes dating from 1938-1948. Included are applications for admission to graduate school and for fellowships, assistant-ships, scholarships, instructorships and departmental faculty positions. Also included is a run of correspondence, 1953-1955, arranged chronologically, concerning positions available in other institutions and the placement of Northwestern students and faculty in those positions.

Files pertaining to the departmental Budget including correspondence concerning budgetary matters, requisition forms and payroll invoices for temporary employees, arranged chronologically, 1922-1948. Also included are four folders of time sheets and pay records for paper graders, arranged chronologically, 1943-1948.

Files of Class “Notes” including ten folders of mimeographed material used as texts for classes. Half of the “Notes” are for Analysis Seminars, the balance are unidentified and are often incomplete. Those dated cover the years 1941-1943.

Departmental Administrative Records consisting of intra-departmental correspondence, class lists, departmental minutes, course outlines, curricular reorganization materials, lists of office assignments and office hours and time schedules. These files, 1935-1943, are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Examinations files including exams given for the regular A, B, C, and D level courses, Comprehensive Exams utilized for advanced placement, Ph.D. preliminary examinations and a folder of miscellaneous exams. The A, B, C and D level exams are arranged chronologically, 1913 - 1948, as are the others.

Grade Books, usually identifiable by course number and year, are arranged chronologically, 1921 to 1942. Grade Lists and other grade reports arranged chronologically, 1922-1942, are also included.

Records pertaining to The Navy Program, instituted during World War II to provide special training for Navy recruits, including course outlines, schedules, grades, attendance records, class lists, course descriptions, class notes and correspondence relating to the Mathematics Department's participation in the program, 1942-1945.

Personnel Files consisting of individual folders for graduate students, faculty, and prospective faculty members which, while incomplete, include correspondence, reprints of publications and biographical information. The are arranged alphabetically by last names.

Registration Statistics including a folder of correspondence with Northwestern University Registrar Katharine George, and three folders of registration data, 1916-1942, listing the number of students in classes, aggregate and individual grades, and faculty course assignments.

Students Files including three folders of correspondence with and about undergraduate, graduate and summer session students, as well as requests for assistantships and fellowships, 1931-1945.
