Scope and Contents

The William A. Earle Papers fill one box and date between 1941 and 1988. The collection consists of biographical materials, his writings, and correspondence. The biographical materials include Earle's diplomas, his undergraduate convocation program, press releases, resumes, and obituaries.

Earle's dissertations, "The Limits of Intelligibility," University of Aix-Marseilles (1948), and "Thought and Its Object," University of Chicago (1952), are in separate folders. Earle's writings are represented by typescript article drafts, journal reprints, and draft and published versions of book reviews. Article drafts and a few published works are in individual folders.

The papers of William A. Earle (a member of Northwestern University's Department of Philosophy from 1948-1982) fill one box and date between 1941 and 1988. The collection consists of biographical materials, his writings (dissertations; and other writings), and correspondence. The biographical materials include Earle's diplomas, his undergraduate convocation program, press releases, resumes, and obituaries.

Arrangement Note

Dissertations are organized chronologically, while writings are organized alphabetically by title.

Method of Acquisition

The University Archives acquired the Earle Papers on February 13, 1989 by the Estate of William Earle, via Charles F. Moles, Earle's attorney (Accession #89-29).

Separated Materials

Nineteen books by Earle have been transferred to the University Archives' faculty publications collection. Photographs have been transferred to the University Archives' photograph collection. Earle's 1948 diploma has been added to the University Archives' diploma collection.
