Scope and Contents

This collection fills two and one-half boxes and dates between 1922 and 1965. It consists of a collection of membership records maintained on index cards. Cards feature the names (sometimes both maiden and married) of Mortar Board members, contemporary mailing addresses (dating from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s), and the years of members' graduation from Northwestern.

Membership records exist in both chronological and alphabetical arrangements. The chronologically arranged records are foldered according to year of graduation. The alphabetically arranged records are foldered according to members' surnames. The alphabetical arrangement also includes cross references to members' name changes.

Abstract

Mortar Board was founded at Syracuse, New York, in 1918 as a national college honorary society for senior women. In 1921, members of Cap and Tassel, a senior women's honorary at Northwestern University, petitioned Mortar Board for a local chapter, which was granted. The records of the Northwestern chapter of Mortar Board fills two and one-half boxes and dates between 1922 and 1965. It consists of membership records maintained on index cards. Cards feature the names (sometimes both maiden and married) of Mortar Board members, contemporary mailing addresses (dating from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s), and the years of members' graduation from Northwestern.

Arrangement

The membership records of the Northwestern University chapter of Mortar Board exist in two separate arrangements: chronological (by year of graduation) and alphabetical (by surname, with cross-references for name changes).
