Biographical/Historical Information

The Free Speech Movement (FSM) of Berkeley, California was a series of large and student-led protests on the UC Berkeley campus during late 1964 and early 1965. At issue were the students’ rights to engage in on-campus political activities, and for the University to recognize more general rights to free speech and academic freedom.

Scope and Content

The Free Speech Movement Collection is arranged in three categories of materials in a total of 40 folders: (1) Serials; (2) Records, Tapes, and Photographs; and (3) Reports, Letters, Bulletins etc. Serials can be found in folders (1) through (4) in alphabetical order by title. Folder (5) contains records and photographs, while tapes are numbered and are located to the right of folders in Box #1. The other materials are found in folders (6) through (40). Each folder in this category has a title which corresponds to a specific subject connected with the Free Speech Movement.

For those not well acquainted with the history of the Free Speech Movement, I recommend reading one of the chronologies contained in folder #17 to aid in determining in which folder more specific information may be found.
