Scope and Contents

The Marina Wolkonsky collection is comprised primarily of the typed English translation of a biographical account of her life and diary kept through 1918; a holograph childhood diary of literary quotations, short entries and poetry in French, Cyrillic and English (ca1909-1912); and miscellaneous materials including information describing the Wolkonsky genealogy, a photograph of Marina Wolkonsky, and a postcard of the church on the site where she is buried in New York.

Abstract

The Wolkonsky family are descendants of the first Russian king, Rurik (d. 879) and other significant members of the Russian royal family through the centuries. The Marina Wolkonsky collection is comprised primarily of the typed English translation of a biographical account of her life and diary kept through 1918, along with a small number of other personal materials.

Method of Acquisition

The Marina Wolkonsky collection was donated to Northwestern University Library in 2000 by Mary Ward-Wolkonsky (ca1908-2002), the wife of Peter Wolkonsky (1923-1999), Marina's son. The gift includes a history of the Wolkonsky family published in Russian in 1900 which was cataloged for the McCormick Library (Rod kniazei Volkonskikh. L947 V9212r).
