Scope and Contents

The Richard Czerwonky Music Manuscripts and Papers contain manuscript and published scores of violinist, composer and conductor Richard Czerwonky (1886-1949) as well as a small subset of personal papers, writing and ephemera. The majority of his compositions and arrangements are for violin solo accompanied by piano but also include many works for string quartet, other chamber ensembles, orchestral works and songs. Most of his published works are now rare and out-of-print. This collection is believed to be the most complete collection of Czerwonky's published and unpublished work in existance.

Abstract

The Richard Czerwonky Music Manuscripts and Papers contains manuscript and published scores of violinist, composer and conductor Richard Czerwonky (1886-1949) as well as a small subset of personal papers, writing and ephemera. Czerwonky was a prolific Chicago-based composer and conductor of German-birth who was active in the early decades of twentieth century and an influential figure in Chicago's classical music scene.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three series: I. Music manuscript scores, II. Published music scores, and III. Publicity, programs, clippings, writing, photographs, and other papers.

Series I. Music manuscript scores is further divided into the following sub-series with materials arranged alphabetically by title of work within each sub-series:

Sub-series 1: Violin solo

Sub-series 2: Chamber ensembles

Sub-series 3: Orchestra

Sub-series 4: Vocal music

Sub-series 5: Music for other instruments

Sub-series 6: Arrangements
