Scope and Contents

This collection contains clippings, memos, publications and other materials from and concerning the New York Daily news (founded 1919). The central part of this collection consists of clippings and other materials related to the strike against the paper in 1990/1991, which ended with the sale of the paper to Robert Maxwell. (The systematic collection of such clippings begins in January, 1990.) Much of the material in this collection of earlier date may have been assembled to support documents prepared during the strike. The focus of these materials is the public perception of the Daily news and the Tribune; there are no internal documents in this collection related to the labor negotiations, or to the negotiations that led to the sale of the Daily news. The collection also contains published material about the sale of the paper to Robert Maxwell, and about Robert Maxwell himself.

Abstract

This collection contains clippings, memos, publications and other materials from and concerning the New York Daily news (founded 1919).

Arrangement

The collection primarily consists of papers that were already arranged in chronological order; the remaining scattered materials have been incorporated into this arrangement. Bundles of clippings that were fastened together have been retained as found, arranged by the date of distribution; a bundle issued at the beginning of a month typically includes clippings from the end of the previous month.

At the time the materials were processed, there was also an identifiable separate group of materials related to Robert Maxwell; and a separate collection of memos to employees; these separate groups have been maintained. A few additional separate groups were created for annual reports, public relations folders, and publications for employees.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

Received from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, Chicago Tribune Company, and Nexstar Media Group on January 10, 2020, accession #SPEC-2020-1.

Related Materials

The Tribune Company Archive contains extensive additional materials on the strike of 1990/1991: series XII-15, XII-18, XII-19 and XII-20.

Separated Materials

About 2 linear feet of duplicate materials were identified and removed. Some duplicates likely remain.
