The Abbey Theatre Newspaper Clipping Collection contains around 58 clippings from 1902 to 1911 about the newly formed company (also known as the National Theatre of Ireland). Clippings are primarily relating to performances of the society in England, as well as the United States, particularly Boston.

The materials relate to the opening of the society, reviews of both performances and plays (including several original productions), and publicity pieces of the members of the company. Some articles touch on controversies surrounding the portrayal of the Irish within these performances and plays.

Biographical / Historical

The Irish National Theatre Society was founded in 1903 in Dublin, by a combination of Irish playwrights and dramatists, including William Butler Yeats, Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and John Millington Synge. Shortly after establishment, the Society purchased and reopened the Abbey Theatre (Dublin) as their permanent home when not on tour. Many of the founding members would go on to produce first performances of their works with the society.

The Irish National Theatre Society is synonymously known as Abbey Theatre which is itself also known as The National Theatre of Ireland.
