Biography

Northwestern University began awarding honorary master's degrees in the 1860s. In 1891 courses leading to advanced earned degrees were offered and the first PhD was awarded in 1896. The Graduate School, however, was not officially established until 1910.

Abstract James joined Northwestern University's faculty in 1897 as a professor of history, where he remained until retirement in 1935. James also served as the first Dean of the Graduate School at NU from 1917 – 1931. In addition to his teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels James engaged in historical investigation and writing, particularly about the revolutionary period and the Midwest.
