Biography

Northwestern University began awarding honorary master's degrees in the 1860s. In 1891 courses leading to advanced earned degrees were offered and the first PhD was awarded in 1896. The Graduate School, however, was not officially established until 1910.

Abstract Clarence Lester Ver Steeg initially joined Northwestern as a Professor of United States History in 1950 and served as Dean of The Graduate School from 1975 to 1986. Ver Steeg was most well known for teaching American history courses. Aside from his teaching responsibilities, he was instrumental in expanding graduate education programs.
