Northwestern University (Evanston, Ill.). Department of Classics

 Organization

Biography

Between 1964 and 1992, the Northwestern University Classics Department had a variety of well-known and respected faculty members. Carl Roebuck served as the departmental chair from 1954 until 1975. He had been a member of the Northwestern University faculty since 1952 as an associate professor, and became a full professor in 1957. He published several books on ancient history including The World of Ancient Times, Ionian Trade and Colonization, and Corinth, Volume XIV. He also wrote several articles including “The Grain Trade between Greece and Egypt”, and “The Settlements of Phillip II with the Greek States in 338 B.C.”.

Stuart G. P. Small replaced Roebuck as chair from 1975-1978. Small was a long time faculty member of the department, who arrived at Northwestern University in 1955 and continued to serve in until his retirement in 1989. Small published Catullus: A Readers Guide to the Poems in 1983. His term as chair was short, however, and in 1979, he was replaced by John Wright.

Wright served as chair of the department from 1979 to 1992. He published many books and articles on Greek language and literature including Play of Antichrist (1967), Essays on Iliad (1978), Homeric Greek (1985), and Plautus (1981).

The classics department also had other distinguished faculty, including Grundy Steiner, who taught at Northwestern from 1947 to 1984. He published many works including Studies in the Text Tradition of Jerome's Votae Patrum (1942), The Symbolic Hero: Patterns and Values in Myths, as well as a paper entitled “Prometheus: A Changing Symbol for Changing Ideas.” Reginald E. Allen began teaching at Northwestern in 1978. His writings include “The Speech of Claucon in Plato's Republic” (1987), and Dialogues of Plato (4 vol., 1984). James E. Packer taught at Northwestern from 1966-1976. His best known book, The Forum of Trajan in Rome, describes the structure and architecture of this ancient Roman structure. He also made history by helping to design an online virtual tour of the Forum, which was destroyed by several earthquakes in the 9th Century.
