Biography
Northwestern's Centennial Conference on the Arts, entitled "The Arts in Modern Society" was held April 19 and 20, 1951, in conjunction with the University's Centennial Celebration. The Conference featured lectures and panel discussions with thirteen noted critics, authors, and representatives of the fields of literature, theatre, painting, architecture, commercial art, and philosophy. Jacques Barzun, the Conference's major lecturer, spoke on the topic "The Artist and Modern Society - Duel or Divorce?"
