Loujon Press

 Organization

Historical Note

Loujon Press was founded by Jon and Louise “Gypsy Lou” Webb in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1960, they began crafting The Outsider, a publication dedicated to the newest in poetry and prose from American underground writers. The press served as a vehicle for the early writings of avant-garde authors and Beat Generation poets of the 1960s such as Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, Charles Bukowski, William Burroughs, Charles Olson, Louis Zukofsky, Norman Mailer, Diane DiPrima and Henry Miller. The press also published multiple books, such as Charles Bukowski’s It Catches My Heart in Its Hands (1963) and Henry Miller’s Insomnia or the Devil at Large (1970).

Though Loujon’s publications were successful and lauded within the community, an unsustainable business model, a series of difficult years for Jon and Louise’s health and printing equipment trouble allotted for only four issues of The Outsider to be created. Jon Webb’s death in 1971 subsequently ended Loujon Press.
