Biography

Uri Orlev was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1931. He survived the Warsaw Ghetto and the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp and moved to Israel in 1946 after the war. He began writing children's literature in 1976 and has published more than 30 books which have been translated into at least 36 languages. He received the Hans Christian Andersen Author Award in 1996 and has received various other honors and awards for his writing. The Island on Bird Street (1981) has been one of his most famous books for children.
