Biography

Lois Wilfred Griffiths was born in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, on June 27, 1899. She attended elementary and high school in the state of Washington, obtained her B. S. (1921) and M. S. (1923) at the University of Washington, and received her Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Chicago in 1927.

Griffiths came to Northwestern University in 1927 as an instructor in mathematics. She was promoted to assistant professor of mathematics in 1930 and to associate professor in 1938. Her special field of research was number theory. Upon her retirement form Northwestern in 1964 she became associate professor emeritus. She died on November 9, 1981.
