Biography

Seán O'Faoláin was born John Whelan on February 22, 1900, in Cork, Ireland; he changed his name to its Gaelic variant in 1916. He received his education at National University of Ireland and Harvard University. He fought in the Irish Revolution, 1918 - 1921; lectured at Harvard University and Boston College in 1929 and St. Mary’s College, 1929 - 1933. He became a full-time author in 1932 after he won the Femina Prize nomination for Midsummer Night Madness and Other Stories. He has written many short stories, biographies, travel books, essays, and critical studies, but only three novels.

Jean Howard Hagstrum taught English Literature at Northwestern University from 1940 until his retirement in 1981. His extensive papers document his educational, teaching, administrative, and scholarly career.
