Biography

Barry Gilbert was born in Cairo, Illinois in 1876. He obtained an A.B. degree from Northwestern in 1898 and an LL.B. in 1901. He married Mary Peterson in 1901 when he was practicing law in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. From 1903 to 1917 he was a professor of law for short periods of two to five years at the University of Iowa, the University of Illinois, and the University of California. In 1917 he moved to Chicago and joined a law firm, where he remained until his retirement in 1952. His publications include a text book and numerous law reviews. Mr. Gilbert was also a poet. He died in November, 1961 at the age of 85. One son survives.
