Biography

James Maurice Howell was born in Chicago to Charles Maurice Howell and Harriett Waring Howell on February 8, 1913. His parents were natives of Ontario, Canada. He attended Northwestern University from 1931 to 1935, when he graduated with a B.A. degree in Classics. While at Northwestern, Howell, who went by the nicknames 'Maurie' or 'Spook', was a drum carrier in the marching band and a member of the glee club. He was initiated into the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity in September of 1934 and remained active in the fraternity after graduation. Howell worked at the Retail Credit Company after graduation.

Howell was married to Helen Elisabeth Taggart, an NU graduate (Arts '40). The couple had several children. Mrs. Howell died on July 17, 1964.

Howell served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during World War II and thereafter, and attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After the war he worked in California. Howell died in Atlanta, Georgia on December 6, 1994.

Abstract

The scrapbook, which measures approximately 11" by 17", contains mementos from Howell's years at Northwestern and the years immediately following his graduation.
