Biography

Joseph Bartlett Dorr (1825-1865), left the management of the Dubuque Herald to recruit soldiers for the 12th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers in 1861. He was promoted from lieutenant to colonel in 1862 after escaping a Confederate prison with some of his regiment. Col. Dorr kept a journal during his imprisonment which was later published as Journal of My Prison Life (Dubuque, Iowa, 1877). He also drafted a history of the 8th Cavalry’s activities for 1863-1864 in Tennessee and Georgia. Col. Dorr was killed in action in 1865.
