Biography

Author and playwright Paul Ableman was born June 13, 1927, in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. His first novel, I Hear Voices, was published by the Olympia Press, Paris in 1958, and later published in England where it was received with critical acclaim. As Near As I Can Get appeared in 1962. Ableman then turned to writing short surrealistic sketches for the theater which were first performed at the Edinburgh Festivals. Green Julia is his first full-length play; the world premiere took place at the 1965 Edinburgh Festival in a Traverse Theatre production which was transferred to the New Arts Theatre, London, where it had a successful run. Ableman had a successful career writing plays for the theater and for television, as well as various kinds of experimental prose.  He died in 2006.
