 Person

Biography

Claudine V. Mason was born on September 7, 1899, in Wingate, Indiana, the daughter of George W. and Edna Win (Phillips) Van Cleave. She earned her B.A. at Northwestern University in 1921. While a student, Mason was president of the sophomore class, a member of the student council, and was active in the YWCA and Shi Ai, the junior women's honorary society. She was a member of Chi Omega sorority and, after her graduation, served as an advisor to the Northwestern chapter. Mason later became a national alumnae officer of Chi Omega.

Northwestern University appointed Mason Counselor to Women in 1948, succeeding Ruth McCarn. In 1952 the University changed the titles of the Counselors of Women and Men to those of Dean of Women and Dean of Men.

Mason took a strong and active interest in the personal, social, and scholastic engagements of the University's women students. The 1954 edition of the Northwestern yearbook, the Syllabus, was dedicated to her. She retired from the deanship in 1960 and was succeeded in this position by Patricia Thrash.

On June 26, 1922, she married Frank M. Mason (Northwestern University B.A. 1920). The couple had two daughters: Wynn (Mrs. Robert Taylor) and Judith Anne (Mrs. Clark Macomber). The Masons lived in Indianapolis and St, Louis before moving to Evanston in the early 1930s. Frank Mason died on March 14, 1976, and Claudine Mason died on December 22, 1993.
