Biography

Florence Emerson Herbert was born December 4, 1889, at LaGrange, Indiana, the daughter of Henry Martyn Herbert and Almira Georgiana Emerson Herbert. She attended LaGrange High School and matriculated in September, 1909, to Northwestern University. Herbert joined Kappa Alpha Theta sorority at Northwestern, pledged to that sorority’s local chapter in fall, 1909, and initiated to membership on February 12, 1910. She left Northwestern before completing her degree. Emerson married Donald Carlos Heffley, a fellow Northwestern alumnus (class of 1915), on August 26, 1919, at LaGrange, where the couple established a home. Donald Heffley died February 8, 1951, and Florence on August 21, 1977. Both are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in LaGrange.
