Biography

J. Howard Wood was born in Downers Grove, Illinois, graduated from Lake Forest College, and studied at Harvard University. After working at several suburban newspapers, he started with the Chicago Tribune as a reporter in 1925. He transferred in 1928 to the financial section, eventually becoming the financial editor. He became the Tribune Company's assistant auditor in 1939 and its auditor in 1942, and subsequently as treasurer, vice president, business manager, general manager and a director. He served as publisher of the Chicago Tribune from 1960 to 1968 and chairman of the Tribune Company from 1966 through 1970. Wood also served two terms as president of the American Newspaper Publishers Association.
