Biography

Harold F. Grumhaus was born in Naperville on April 19, 1903, graduated from Downers Grove High School and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His career with the Tribune Company may be briefly summarized as follows:

  • September 1934: Joined the Tribune organization as head of the insurance department of the Tribune Company and Canadian subsidiaries of the Tribune Company
  • July 1941: named assistant production manager of the Chicago Tribune, in charge of labor relations
  • June 1955: Named production manager of the Chicago Tribune
  • July 1960: Elected a vice-president of the Tribune Company and appointed business manager of the Chicago Tribune
  • March 1964: Succeeded Arthur Schmon as a trustee of the McCormick-Patterson Trust, and appointed general manager of the Chicago Tribune.
  • September 1966: Elected president of the Tribune Company
  • December 1967: Named president of the Chicago Tribune Company
  • January 1969: Named publisher of the Chicago Tribune
  • November 1970: Elected chairman of the Tribune Company
  • May 1971: Elected chairman of the Chicago Tribune Company
  • April 1974: Elected chairman of the executive committee of the Tribune Company, and president and chairman of WGN Continental Broadcasting Company
  • Mr. Grumhaus retired as publisher of the Chicago Tribune in April 1973, as chairman and chief executive officer of the Tribune Company in April 1974, and from all board memberships in April 1978.
