Biography

Eleanor Medill Patterson (1881-1948) is listed in the 1948 edition of Who's Who as "editor, publisher, and sole owner of the Washington (D.C.) Times-Herald; director Chicago Tribune Co., N.Y. Daily News Co., and all affiliated companies." The granddaughter of Joseph Medill, daughter of Robert W. Patterson, sister of Captain Joseph Medill Patterson, and cousin of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, Mrs. Patterson herself entered the newspaper business late in life, at age 49, as editor of the Hearst paper, the Washington Herald. It was at this time, in 1930, that she resumed her maiden name. She had been married twice, to Count Joseph Gizycki, from whom she was divorced in 1917, and to attorney Elmer Schlesinger, who died in 1929.
