Biography

Robert Rutherford McCormick (born July 30, 1880, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.; died April 1, 1955, Wheaton, Illinois) was an American newspaper editor and publisher, popularly known as Colonel McCormick, whose idiosyncratic editorials made him the personification of conservative journalism in the United States. Under his direction the Chicago Tribune achieved the largest circulation among American standard-sized newspapers and led the world in newspaper advertising revenue.

These memoirs were originally presented as part of McCormick's weekly radio addresses, and were intended for eventual publication, but were never published. This series contains groups of photographic negatives and prints of Cantigny farm and grounds (Robert R. McCormick's estate in Wheaton, Illinois) found among the unprocessed Tribune Company Archives materials. One group of negatives shows a large event (or several similar events); another contains aerial views of the main house and immediate surroundings; a third shows a tree on the grounds being felled.

These photographic transparencies show Col. Robert R. McCormick, Maryland McCormick (his second wife), his associates and properties. The images include reunions of the First Division at Cantigny Farm, and the 80th birthday celebration for Weymouth Kirkland (McCormick's former law partner). Most of the images are black and white negatives, but the collection also includes a few color positive transparencies.
