Kalmes, Jackie

 Person

Biography

Jackie Kalmes expressed a strong interest in visual art from a very young age, with this interest inspiring her to become a photographer. After working in a film and design studio, Kalmes accepted a position as photographic coordinator for Northwestern University. While at Northwestern, Kalmes was promoted to University staff photographer, a position she held until 1983. Kalmes photographed a wide variety of subjects, people, and events at Northwestern.

Her time photographing art classes and other University art functions inspired her to complete an art degree at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Kalmes also took formal coursework through Northwestern University’s Division of Continuing Education. Kalmes’ non-photographic art, such as her mobile quilts, is predominantly painted, wood-based, and involves kinetic elements.
