Thomas Steven (Tommy) Doles was born December 25, 1995, at Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Jack and Susan Doles. He attended Grand Rapids Christian High School and led the school’s football team to a 2012 Division 3 Michigan state championship. Doles played left tackle on both offense and defense and was a team captain. He earned most valuable players honors as a senior in 2013. Doles was a three-time All-Conference standout and a 2013 All-State honoree. He took places on the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News All-State Dream Team and twice earned selection to the Grand Rapids Press Area Dream Team. Doles received his diploma from Grand Rapids Christian in 2014.
Matriculating to Northwestern University and joining the Northwestern football team, Doles redshirted during his freshman year and made his collegiate debut in a 2015 game against Eastern Illinois. Doles in 2016 started for all 13 of his team’s games, mainly at right guard, and earned Honorable Mention recognition with the All-Big Ten football team as voted by coaches and the media. He also earned selection to the Academic All-Big Ten team. In 2017 Doles started at right guard for all 13 of Northwestern’s games. He was named a Consensus Third-Team All-Big Ten selection and again took a place on the Academic All-Big Ten team. Doles was a team captain for Northwestern during 2018, the season his team placed first in the conference’s West Division. He appeared in all of the team’s 13 games and again made the conference’s Academic All-Big Ten team.
Doles took a Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern, majoring in political science, in 2018. He received his Master of Science in Management degree from Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management in 2019. While a student he participated in Athletes in Action, Uplifting Athletes, the Residence Hall Association, and Associated Student Government.
