Scope and Contents
The John Giles music manuscripts and papers consist of manuscripts and copies of Giles's art songs including corresponding programs, photographs and audio recordings on compact disc and correspondence. His other compositions are not found in this collection and the location of these manuscripts, if still extant, are unknown.
The music manuscripts are heavily annotated and there are several different revisions of a given work within each work's folder. The Complete Art Songs (formerly housed in a binder) contain copies of each song but only the teaching copies have annotations.

Abstract
The John Giles music manuscripts and papers consist of music manuscripts (predominantly vocal music including art songs, duets and choral works), programs, photographs, audio recordings on compact disc and correspondence.
Arrangement
The Giles music manuscripts and papers consists of 9 boxes preserving the original order and arrangement of the materials at the time of acquisition. The alphanumeric numbering of the boxes represent the original box numbers (records carton size) which have been divided into smaller boxes for preservation and ease of use. The original arrangement is represented below with the two series and three sub-series designations added and applied during processing.
Series I. Music Manuscripts with lyrics, programs, photos, and correspondence arranged in three sub-series corresponding to the three divisions of art songs representing Giles's original order of the materials. Each set of art songs is arranged alphabetically by title within the set. Some duplication of titles across the three sets occurs.
Materials in Series I are arranged alphabetically by title of work with relevant programs, correspondence, lyric sheets and other associated papers filed by Giles within the same folder as the music manuscript or score to each composition.
Series II. Bound manuscript music: The Complete Art Songs, Duets and Other Vocal Music
Contains copies of Giles's complete vocal works and was formerly housed in two three ring binders. The original and order of arrangement of these two volumes have been preserved but the materials have been removed from the binders and foldered for preservation purposes.
There were multiple CDs of John Giles’ published work, "Songs for All Seasons,” two loose cards separated from the other folders in the original arrangement scheme. They are housed in separate folders at the end of the the relevant series/sub-series.
Oversized materials are housed in separate boxes to accomodate irregular sizes and shapes but are arranged according to the original arrangment scheme at the time the collection was received.
