Scope and Contents

Contains documents, artifacts, interview tapes, and other materials relating to the ONCE Group and ONCE festivals. It contains the dissertation research materials of Sandra Braun, much of which is primary material given to her by members of the ONCE Group whom she had interviewed.

Abstract

The ONCE Group of American composers and avant-garde artists evolved in the late 1950s in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  This collection contains documents, artifacts, interview tapes, and other materials relating to the ONCE Group and ONCE festivals.

Method of Acquisition

Sandra Braun's papers were received in May 1980 from her father, Isaac M. Abeles; the Milton Cohen slide projections were received in September 1980 from Gerome Kamrowski; Robert Ashley's papers came in 1984.  Additional contributions from George Cacioppo (1980), WUOM (1980), Robert Sheff (1980), Jerome Kamrowski (1980), Richard James (1982), Ralf Dietrich (1998), and Michael Daugherty (2010).

Existence and Location of Originals

Archival compact disc copies of the WUOM audiotape reels are available in the Music Listening Center (ACD0001--ACD0033).
